Acute Home Based Treatment Program for Severe Mental Illness - Richmond

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

Offers short-term, in-home acute psychiatric care for clients ages 17 and up with severe mental illness, as an alternative to hospitalization.
This service is for people experiencing an increase in symptoms or distress related to mental illness or substance use. It is also designed to provide individuals who are currently experiencing a psychiatric crisis the opportunity of choosing where they get their acute psychiatric treatment.

Acute Home Based Treatment offers:
  • Treatment in a comfortable, familiar environment with minimal disruption to day-to-day living
  • Choice, so that hospital care is not the only option
  • Coordinated treatment with clients and their caregivers
The AHBT team will visit the client's home to discuss their symptoms and prescribe and monitor medications as required. The number and length of visits depend on the client's care plan.

A referral is required from a medical professional.

Eligibility: For people 17 years and older living in Richmond, who are experiencing a worsening of symptoms or distress due to mental illness and/or substance use concerns, and who are willing and able to accept care at home.

Clients cannot participate in this program if they are actively suicidal or at risk of harming others, or not living in a safe home environment (e.g. there are weapons or other individuals with a history of violence in the home).
Referral Instructions: Referrals are accepted by physicians, allied health professionals, and home health. (See form and fax number information below).
