Fair PharmaCare Plan

Provided by Government of British Columbia

The program helps B.C. families pay for eligible prescription drugs, dispensing fees and some medical supplies.
Fair PharmaCare helps B.C. families pay for eligible prescription drugs, dispensing fees and some medical supplies. To register for Fair PharmaCare, families must have Medical Services Plan (MSP) coverage. Fair PharmaCare is income-based; the less a family earns, the more help they get. Coverage is for families, not individuals.

All residents of B.C. are eligible for Fair PharmaCare coverage if they:
  • Have Medical Services Plan (MSP) coverage, and
  • Give PharmaCare permission to check their income with the Canada Revenue Agency. (Income is from two years prior.)

A full list of what Fair PharmaCare covers is available online. Coverage includes:
  • Eligible prescription drugs
  • Some medical devices
  • Eligible dispensing fees and some pharmacy services (such as medication reviews for persons prescribed five medications or more)

Interested families can register online, by phone or by paper form. To register by phone from the Lower Mainland, call 604 683-7151; from the rest of B.C., call 1 800 663-7100.

To register all family members will need to provide their Personal Health Number and Birth dates. Spouses will need to provide Social Insurance Numbers and an income from tax return from two years ago.

Temporary coverage starts the same day as registration based on the income information provided. After registration, PharmaCare will send a consent form that must be filled in, signed, and sent back within 30 days, in order to check income with the CRA. It may take up to 90 days to confirm income with the CRA. Once income is verified, PharmaCare will send a confirmation letter within 30 days.
